provisional licence

noun a licence to drive a motor vehicle, obtained after passing a driving test, which stipulates a restricted speed and the use of P-plates, usually for one year. Compare probationary licence.
Contributor's comments: In NSW we refer to these as your P's ie "when are you getting your P's?" Pronounced peez. It's a teenage slang word in my experience.

Contributor's comments: We also refer to it as getting your P's in Tasmania.

Contributor's comments: Provisional License drivers are also referred to as "P -Platers" or those who held their "P Plates".

Contributor's comments: In Perth the term is P Plates. I haven't heard it shortened to P's before.

Contributor's comments: Same usage applies in SA - probably very widespread, & not really a regionalism.

Contributor's comments: this term is also used throughout WA.

Contributor's comments: Queensland has provisional licences, but no P-plates. (We had them for a few years in the mid 1970s, but then dropped them).
