hairy mary

kiwi fruit: I think I'll slice up some hairy marys to put on the pavlova.

Contributor's comments: When I was growing up on the North Coast in the 60s and 70s, hairy mary referred to the tiny hair-like prickles that you could get off some plants especially some grasses. A friend who lived on a mixed farm said it referred to the prickles on sugar cane.
